Colorado State Requirements

Course completions are reported within hours of completion. Colorado rules state that course completions must be reported no later than 30 days after the course completion date. Accordingly, complete and pay for your bundle within 30 days from the date you complete your first course in the bundle.

24 CE hours of insurance continuing education are required each 2 year renewal period, 3 hours of which must be in Ethics.  See license renewal dates below.


Colorado has course topic requirements. See CE Course Topic Requirements and Exemptions below. 


Producers planning to sell the following product(s) have special training requirements:

Special Training/Education Requirements

Annuity Training Requirement

  • Before selling, soliciting, or negotiating annuity products in Colorado producers must complete a one-time annuity training course approved for at least 4 hours.
  • Go to the BestEd course menu to complete your state-approved CO 4-Hour Annuity Training Course

Long-Term Care (LTC)

  • Initial 16-hour training requirement: Before selling LTC policies in Colorado producers must complete 16 hours of state approved LTC training.  Part 1 of the 16 hours shall consist of 8 hours on general LTC, which can be taken online self study or in a classroom, and Part 2 shall consist of 8 hours specific to LTC partnership, which must be taken in a classroom. 
  • Ongoing 5-hour training requirement: After completing the initial 16-hour training, producers continuing to sell LTC must complete no less than 5 hours of ongoing training in a classroom setting every 2 calendar years after the initial completion.

Property and Casualty and Personal Lines Producers

24 CE hours, including 3 hours of ethics, are required every 2 year license term.

Special Training/Education Requirements

If you plan to sell the following products you are required to complete the appropriate special training.

Flood Insurance 

  • All Colorado resident property and casualty or personal lines producers who sell flood insurance are required to complete a one-time 3-hour course approved for National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) training.

Claims-Made


All Colorado resident producers engaged in the sale, consultation, or adjustment of claims-made policies must complete a one-time 2-hour state approved course on claims-made policies.  


Homeowners Insurance Coverage

  • Colorado licensees that sell property or personal lines insurance must complete three (3) hours of continuing education on homeowner's (HO) insurance coverage each license term. The same course title cannot be repeated in 2 consecutive renewal periods. A different course title must be selected.
  • Go to the BestEd course menu to select your state-approved CO Homeowner Insurance course or CO Homeowner Valuation course. 

Public Adjusters

  • As of January 1, 2014 24 CE hours, including 3 hours of Ethics, are required every 2 year license period.

License Renewal Dates 

The license period is 2 years and ends on the last day of the licensee's birth month.

Even birth years renew in even years.  Odd birth years renew in odd years.

The Insurance Continuing Education requirement must be completed each 2 years license period by the last day of the licensee's birth month. Examples:

  • Even year birth month: You receive your license 1-30-2016 your next license period begins 1-30-2018
  • Odd year birth month: You receive your license 1-30-2015 your next license period begins 1-13-2017

Course Topic Requirements

You need 24-hour Continuing Education credit hours.

  •   3 of which are required to be in Ethics
  • 18 hours are required to be in on topics addressing your license type
  •   3 remaining hours can be taken in any topic (miscellaneous)

Any excess hours you complete in Ethics or Homeowners apply to the 3 hour miscellaneous CE requirement.

Approved Course Formats

There are 2 approved insurance ce course formats in Colorado

  • Self-Study
  • Classroom

Final Exam Requirements

Student should read the course material prior to taking the final exam. 

Exam proctor requirements

Exams can be by remote proctoring or proctored by a disinterested third party at least 18 years old. Proctors may not be family members, employers/supervisors, employees/subordinates, partners/joint ventures/co-owners; or anyone who has an economic or other interest in your successful completion of the examination.


Exam requirements

  • A successful course completion score of 70% or higher is required to receive credit for a ce course.
  • Licensees can retake the exam as many times as needed to successfully complete the course.
  • Exams that are not successfully completed can be retaken at no additional charge.

 Continuing Education Carryover Requirements

A maximum of 12 CE credit hours completed in excess of the producers 24 are carried forward to the next renewal period, if the courses are completed in the final 120 days of the previous license cycle. 


Ethics or Homeowners course hours carry forward as general credit hours.

Colorado Rules for Repeating Insurance CE Courses Ethics and Product Training Courses

You can't take the same course twice during on renewal period.

 CE Certificate of Completion

Best Insurance Education Company, BestEd, emails printable certificates of completion in Colorado. The completion certificates are emailed to you when you make payment after completing your continuing education courses.  Keep a copy of each certificate of completion for 5 years per Colorado rules and regulations.

CE Completion Reporting

BestEd reports completions to Sircon within 24-48 hours of course completion.  

Remember: the State of Colorado uses your course completion date, not the report date, for compliance purpose.

Process to Renew your Insurance License 

Licensees are required to renew their insurance license on the Sircon Web site on or before the license renewal date.  www.Sircon.com

Continuing Education Exemptions

First-time producers have until their second continuation cycle to comply.


Licensees that write one or more of the following are exempt:

  • Crop hail
  • Limited lines credit
  • Title
  • Travel ticket selling 

If an inpidual course is selected it must be purchased within 60 day of date taken.

If a bundle of courses is selected, all courses in the bundle must be taken and payment made within 60 days of the first course in order to be reported to the state, and receive the bundle discount.

If payment is not made, the course(s) will become inactive.
